Hypnosis is often portrayed in movies as a wacky, magical tool used to control people’s minds. But did you know that hypnosis can actually be a helpful tool for improving your health and well-being? It’s true! And no, you won’t be clucking like a chicken or falling in love with the first person you see.
Hypnosis is typically used in a clinical setting, and performed by a trained and certified Hypnotherapist. During a hypnosis session, the Hypnotherapist may language patterns (if they use the more modern approach) to lead you into a trance-like state, similar to getting lost in a good book or movie. This state of focused attention can help you experience changes in sensations, perceptions, thoughts, or behaviors, leading to a variety of health benefits.
Here are just a few ways that hypnosis can improve your health and well-being:
Better Sleep: Research shows that hypnosis can be an effective tool for improving sleep. In a study of women with insomnia, those who received hypnosis before bed had significantly better sleep quality and quantity than those who received a placebo. Additionally, hypnosis can be helpful for people who suffer from sleepwalking, also known as somnambulism. In one case study, a man who had been sleepwalking since childhood was able to stop sleepwalking completely after undergoing hypnosis.
Anxiety Relief: Several studies have shown that hypnosis can be an effective treatment for anxiety. In one study of patients with generalized anxiety disorder, those who received hypnotherapy had significant reductions in anxiety symptoms compared to those who received cognitive-behavioral therapy or a control treatment. Hypnosis has also been shown to be effective for phobia treatment, with some studies showing that up to 90% of patients experience significant improvement.
Chronic Pain Management: Research has consistently shown that hypnosis can be an effective tool for managing chronic pain. In a meta-analysis of 18 studies, researchers found that hypnosis was associated with significant reductions in pain intensity, as well as reductions in depression and anxiety. Hypnosis has also been shown to be effective for post-surgery pain, with some studies showing that hypnosis can reduce the need for pain medication.
Quitting Smoking: In a meta-analysis of 59 studies, researchers found that hypnosis was significantly more effective than no treatment or nicotine replacement therapy for smoking cessation. Additionally, a randomized controlled trial found that smokers who received hypnosis were more likely to quit smoking and had higher abstinence rates at 6 and 12 months compared to those who received nicotine replacement therapy.
Phobia Treatment: Hypnosis has been shown to be effective for treating a variety of phobias, including fear of flying, fear of heights, and fear of spiders. In one study of participants with a fear of flying, those who received hypnosis had significant reductions in anxiety and avoidance behaviors compared to those who received no treatment.
