You can know your subject inside out, prepare carefully and still feel your body react as if a presentation is a genuine threat. Your heart races. Your mouth dries up. Your thoughts scatter. You may start worrying days before you have to speak.

That is one of the frustrating things about public speaking anxiety: it can affect people who are highly capable in almost every other part of their lives.

Executives, managers, business owners, sales professionals, teachers and experienced leaders can all feel confident in their knowledge yet intensely uncomfortable when attention turns towards them.

Public speaking anxiety does not automatically mean you lack confidence or ability. Often, the problem is the automatic response your mind and body have learned to associate with being watched, judged or evaluated.

What is performance anxiety?

Performance anxiety is a stress response connected to situations where you feel your performance is being observed or assessed. Public speaking is an obvious example, but the same pattern can appear when you:

  • give a presentation
  • chair an important meeting
  • speak to senior leaders
  • pitch to a prospective client
  • attend a job interview
  • speak on camera
  • perform on stage
  • lead a difficult conversation
  • introduce yourself to a large group
  • answer questions without preparation

Sometimes the fear is not really about speaking. It may be the fear of making a mistake, going blank, looking nervous, being judged or being unable to answer a question.

That is why performance anxiety can overlap with imposter syndrome, perfectionism and fear of failure.

Why does public speaking feel threatening when you know you are safe?

Your logical mind can understand perfectly well that giving a presentation is not physically dangerous. Yet your body can still produce a strong stress response.

Perhaps you froze during a school presentation, were embarrassed in front of a group, had a difficult workplace experience, or simply spent years mentally rehearsing everything that could go wrong. Sometimes there is no obvious single event at all.

Once a fear response becomes automatic, telling yourself to calm down may not be enough. You already know logically that the audience is not a physical threat. The challenge is that your automatic response is running faster than your reasoning.

If overthinking is part of that cycle, you may also find our guide on breaking free from overthinking helpful.

How may hypnotherapy help with public speaking anxiety?

Clinical hypnosis involves focused attention. You are not unconscious, and you do not hand control of your mind to somebody else. You remain involved in the process and can communicate throughout the session.

For first-time clients, this is important because concerns about losing control can create anxiety before the therapy has even begun. You can read more in Can Hypnosis Make You Lose Control? and What is Clinical Hypnosis?.

In work with performance anxiety, hypnotherapy may be used to explore the automatic associations surrounding the feared situation and help you practise different responses.

Instead of repeatedly mentally rehearsing yourself freezing, failing or being judged, the therapeutic process can help you build a calmer and more flexible response to the situation.

The aim is not to convince yourself that nothing will ever go wrong. Real confidence is not perfection. It is being able to trust that you can respond, recover and continue even if something unexpected happens.

Why capable professionals can still struggle with performance anxiety

There is an interesting contradiction in performance anxiety. The person experiencing it may be extremely competent.

You may manage staff, make major decisions, solve complex problems or carry significant responsibility every day. Yet presenting to twenty people can trigger a completely different response.

High-performing people can also increase the pressure through perfectionism. The internal rules become increasingly strict:

  • I cannot stumble.
  • I cannot lose my train of thought.
  • Everyone must think I am competent.
  • I need to sound confident every second.
  • I cannot look nervous.

That is an enormous amount of pressure to carry into a ten-minute presentation.

Learning to loosen those rules and build a more realistic standard can make speaking feel very different. Our article on how to build confidence explores this from another angle.

What happens during online hypnotherapy for performance anxiety?

EcoMindz provides Online Clinical Hypnotherapy sessions only. You attend from a quiet, private location using a secure video consultation. There is no clinic visit or in-person appointment.

Your first session begins with understanding what is actually happening for you. We may explore questions such as:

  • Which situations trigger the strongest response?
  • What do you imagine will happen?
  • What physical sensations appear?
  • What do you do when the anxiety begins?
  • Are you afraid of speaking itself or of being judged?
  • Do perfectionism or imposter syndrome contribute?
  • What would you like to experience instead?

Hypnotherapy can then form part of an individual approach based on your particular pattern and goals.

No two clients experience performance anxiety in exactly the same way, so no responsible therapist can promise that every person will respond identically or within a guaranteed number of sessions.

Three practical things to try before your next presentation

1. Stop rehearsing disaster

Notice how much time you spend mentally practising what you do not want: going blank, forgetting your words, people staring at you or making a mistake.

Preparation is useful. Repeatedly imagining disaster is something different.

Try deliberately rehearsing a more flexible version instead. Imagine beginning, finding your rhythm, noticing some nerves and continuing anyway. You do not need to picture a flawless performance. Picture yourself handling the experience.

2. Slow your exhale

When your body becomes activated, gently make your exhale a little longer and slower than your inhale.

Do not turn breathing into another performance you have to perfect. The aim is simply to interrupt the rush and give your attention somewhere useful to go.

3. Change the goal

Instead of trying to look perfectly confident, ask:

What do I want these people to understand when I finish?

That moves attention away from constantly monitoring yourself and back towards communication.

You are there to share information, explain an idea, lead a discussion or help the people listening. You are not there to win an Olympic medal for standing calmly beside PowerPoint.

What if I am nervous about hypnosis itself?

That is completely reasonable, especially if hypnosis is new to you.

Clinical hypnosis is very different from stage hypnosis. You remain involved, aware and able to communicate. There is no requirement to empty your mind or perform hypnosis correctly.

Understanding the process before your first appointment can remove a lot of uncertainty. Our FAQ and guide to Clinical Hypnosis are good places to start.

When performance anxiety starts making career decisions for you

Avoidance can quietly make performance anxiety more limiting.

You may stop volunteering to present, decline opportunities, let somebody else pitch the idea you created, remain silent in meetings or avoid roles that require more visibility.

Over time, the fear can begin making professional decisions on your behalf.

The goal does not have to be becoming somebody who loves microphones and conference stages. The goal is having more choice: being able to speak when it matters without an automatic fear response deciding what you are capable of doing.
